SORTA donated $1000 to the Okanagan Skaha Teachers’ Hardship Fund and $100 towards a special dinner to support teachers during last year’s teachers’ strike. SORTA also contributes $50 to the Okanagan College bursary fund
in memory of any member who passes away.
There are three Executive meetings plus three combination luncheon/breakfast general meetings a year.
Members are currently being surveyed to determine if there is interest in hosting a COSCO workshop. In the past there has not been much interest expressed in spite of the variety of workshop options.
The SORTA website (www.SORTA.ca) has been re-designed and has been linked to the BCRTA website as well as the Okanagan Skaha Teachers’ Union website. Email contact, however, still seems to be most efficient.
On the opening day of school a ‘To Hell With the Bell’ breakfast is held at a local golf course where retired teachers raise a glass to toast their colleagues still working in the classroom. Both the winter and the spring luncheons are followed by a general meeting.
SCHOLARSHIPS: One $1,000 bursary is awarded an Education student at Okanagan College in Penticton. Up to eight $50 Kiwanis Music Festival scholarship awards are also given.
The branch president or delegate attends the annual local union retirement dinner to make a presentation on the benefits of joining the BCRTA/SORTA. This is followed up by a card of congratulations accompanied by a membership form. SORTA members are informed who the new retirees are so that personal contact and encouragement to join occurs.
