Burnaby Schools' History

The Burnaby Branch of the Retired Teachers' Association, in conjunction with the Heritage Commission of Burnaby City Hall, the Burnaby School Board,-and the R.R. Smith Foundation, are continuing the collection of data on the history of Burnaby schools

Begun by the Retired Teachers Branch, in the 1980's. We are working towards publishing a book on our history, within the next year.

We would welcome contributions from anyone with history, pictures or stories associated with Burnaby Schools' History, 1894 - 2012.

Please contact Janet WHITE jwhite@telus.net for more information.

Burnaby Branch Report 2011

Burnaby has an active group of almost 500 members, which met five times last year at the Shadboldt Centre for the Arts, for luncheons. Our Christmas event is always the most popular and well attended. Our luncheons for the 2011-2012 year will be at a new venue, the Scandinavian Community Centre, which includes plenty of parking. A well written newsletter is given out at these meetings and mailed to those who cannot attend Often guest speakers talk to us on pensions, travel, history or we have the District Grade 7 Public Speaking champions present their winning speeches. Of course, meeting our friends and former colleagues and catching up, is the most energizing part.

We started our 2010 school year with a TO HELL WITH THE BELLS brunch at the Burnaby Mountain Golf Course. Six people along with Executive Members had a good visit where we discussed our events throughout the year and drew for Chapters’ gift cards, for the new retirees.

Our meetings encourage members to purchase 50/50 tickets, and monies raised go to scholarships for our seven secondary schools. At Christmas, we have an auction of new and gently used items donated, which raises more money. Christmas is also a time for giving poinsettias to all our over 85 year old members, which we honour formally at our first luncheon meeting of the New Year. Here they receive corsages and are celebrated with a story of their lives.

Our Past President, Marilyn BULLOCK, made us all proud when she competed in the New York Marathon...a fine example for us all.

The Burnaby Retired Teachers’ Choir is a sub group of our members, with the leader, Kay NORTON, mentoring us twice a year, through a series of beautifully chosen songs to sing to Seniors, at Christmas venues, and for retirement functions.

Dave CARTER coordinates a group of volunteer markers (all Burnaby Retired Teachers) to mark the Commonwealth Essay Contest for British Columbia and the money raised is also used for scholarships for Burnaby students.

Anoher subgroup is the Heritage Schools Committee, made up of retired teachers, administrators, secretairies and a history loving citizen...all working to complete a book this next year on the History of Burnaby Schools 1892-2012. It is not only going to be a history of all Burnaby schools, but it will also include photos and memoirs of people connected with these schools. It is a most interesting, worthwhile and rewarding project, sponsored by the R. R. SMITH Foundation, School District 41 (Burnaby) and the Heritage Commission of Burnaby City Hall.
Respectfully submitted,
Janet White, President
