Central Okanagan Branch Report 2011
The Central Okanagan Retired Teachers’ Association again had an active year. Our Executive met four times and four membership / luncheon meetings were held at the Coast Capri Hotel in Kelowna.
At our Christmas luncheon, retired teachers from Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario retired teachers’ associations, with branches in the Central Okanagan were invited. A 50/50 draw and a live auction were held to help raise funds for our Bursary Programme. Auction items were donated by local businesses.
At our June luncheon meeting, Gerry Tiede of the BC Teachers’ Pension Board spoke to a full house about the new Extended Health plan. He also answered questions about the Pension Plan.
Our association gave out three bursaries of $1,000 each - two to Grade 12 graduates of our District public schools, who indicated a career choice in education, and one bursary to a UBCO Education student, who was a graduate of an SD#23 school and who was proceeding to her professional year.
All retiring teachers were given a package of materials telling them about the BCRTA and CORTA and inviting them to become members. They were also invited to our “Hell with the Bell” Breakfast to be held on Tuesday, September 6th. CORTA held a very successful “Hell with the Bell” Breakfast on the first day of school in September, 2010. Close to a hundred retired teachers attended and were addressed by Doug Edgar, BCRTA President.
Our executive was re-structured to include a Membership Director and a Communication Director, responsible for keeping all members informed of our activities.
Four newsletters were also published. Thanks to the Central Okanagan Teachers’ Association for providing secretarial assistance and for printing our newsletter.
Our Heritage Committee is working with the local School Board to draft a Heritage Policy to be adopted by the Board.
Respectfully submitted,
Rolli Cacchioni, President
