Comox Valley Branch Report 2011

We held lunch meetings in September, November, February, and June at the wonderful oceanside Kingfisher restaurant. In April we went to Campbell River for the Tri-District lunch with CR and Powell River RTAs.

Guest speakers:
At our September lunch Constable Diane Schwager of the North Island Highway Patrol told us many stories, information about safe driving, and updated us on the tightening rules about driving infractions.

Christmas Hampers were prepared with goodies and delivered to 19 of our 85+ members.

In February Doug Edgar, BCRTA president, visited our lunch. Also, Florence Kaeffer told us about her experiences working in Norway House as her first teaching experience and now re-meeting former students. She has been involved in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. She has a great story to share if any others wish to contact her through our Comox Valley branch.

In June Alinda Ware told us about her work in Kenya Oct to April with KEEF, Kenya Education Empowerment Foundation. She coordinates donated funding for students so that they may continue their education.

On April 6 Judy de Vries et al led an informational meeting for RTs about the new health care plan and representatives from Johnsons Inc told about insurances.

Central Island Zone Meeting April 18, 10 am – 3:00 pm
Bob Tavenor, second Vice Chair of BCRTA chaired the meeting. We shared ideas about our own branches and the activities people enjoyed. Carol Prellwitz told us about Pensions and Benefits.

Honouring Retiring Teachers:
The Annual CDTA Retirement Party was Thursday, June 9, in the Crown Isle Resort Ballroom 4-6 pm. This is lovely time of food and spirits to acknowledge the newly retiring teachers and to meet friends.

Bursary:
Status of Bursary: This year the recipient will receive $1295. In the North Island College Foundation we have $30,458. an increase of $194.47 over the past year through generous donations from many of our members. The interest from this fund plus a contribution from the NIC Foundation enabled us to increase our bursary from $1,230 to $1295. this year.

By Laws and Procedures presented to the membership in February at the lunch meeting and by email. These modeled on those developed for the newly forming RTAs and were adopted at the June lunch meeting.

Respectfully submitted,
Amy (Brydon) Yakimyshyn, President
