Coquitlam Branch Report 2011

2010-2011 was another good year for Coquitlam. Once again we had two successful lunches – our September Back to School Lunch at Meadow Gardens - and our Christmas lunch at the Executive Inn. Both events were enjoyed by those who attended. A well-received feature at the Christmas event was the presentation by the Como Lake Middle School Choir under the direction of Annette Coffin. Annette, who has just become a member of the CRTA, also performed songs from her new CD at the June AGM.
Our committees – social, sunshine, bursary, phoning, welcoming and societal concerns continued to do their very productive work.

Our excellent newsletter continues to get many positive reviews, and the list of members receiving their newsletter by e-mail has steadily increased over the year. At present almost half of our members receive their newsletter by email and the number is increasing.

An editorial committee of four people takes responsibility for content, formatting, assembly and mailing. I am pleased to report that this system continues to be working well, and provides a more equitable distribution of the task of publishing the newsletter.
Our executive meetings continue to be lively, informative and interesting. We have an active and committed executive, who are always willing to take on duties when asked.

We have tried to make our general meetings relevant and topical. To this end, we have planned meetings on topics that we feel will be of interest to our membership. This year we had a meeting focusing on travel and travel experiences, a presentation from UBC and Simon Fraser Universities on Saving Tax Dollars, a seminar on the new Extended Health Plan, and, as mentioned earlier, a musical presentation at our AGM in June.

Membership continues to be a prime focus at both the provincial and local level. . Letters inviting our newly retired members to join the CRTA were sent out in mid-July, and those attending will be introduced at the Back to School Luncheon. In the past, many of each year’s retirees from Coquitlam have joined the BCRTA and we are hoping for another high rate of return this year.

Our executive is undergoing some changes this year. Vice President Lionel Daneault submitted his resignation as he is moving to Qualicum in the very near future. Eunice Hodge and Pat Lomax have decided to move on to other things. All three of these people will be missed as their contributions to the CRTA Executive over the years have been extremely valuable.

In summary then, Coquitlam Retired Teachers’ have had another excellent year and are looking forward to next year.
