Lower Vancouver Island Branch Report 2011

A major focus of LVIRT is to get our members out to social functions, and through our 5 yearly Bulletins, to keep them apprised of local issues and a variety of opportunities of interest to retirees in our area such as our walking, cycling and bridge groups as well as events taking place in the community.

We are trying very hard to get new retirees interested in joining and becoming active, but when they attend the first “To Hell with the Bell” luncheon, many don’t like to be seen with so many ‘old people’, though we had more ‘young people’ at our luncheon on March 7.  We have many of the RTAs most senior members in our local—many over 90 and a few over 100.  Recruiting the newly retired, unless they were active on their local  Executives, continues to be a challenge.

At the October luncheon we presented our local scholarships.  This year we were able to award 3 scholarships to deserving and worthy students.  We also sold copies of “Chalkdust”, compiled by Judi Warrington in her capacity as Heritage chair.  The proceeds from the first 5 copies sold were donated to our Scholarship Fund.

The focus of our December luncheon is always to raise funds for future Scholarships.
Members donate and/or solicit items for raffle/silent auction.  This year we raised $500, slightly over ½ of what was raised the previous year.

We completed a major revision of our Constitution and By-laws, in keeping with those of the RTA, to be adopted at our 2012 AGM.  A motion to raise our local dues to $10/year, beginning Sept. 2012 carried without dissent.

An Executive changeover meeting for late May/early June has been added to our annual meeting schedule to facilitate a smooth transition of duties/responsibilities.

Sending our Bulletins by e-mail has saved enough in postage to publish one more edition each year, should the editor have the time and be willing to do so.
We currently have 1070 members.

An additional $1700 in donations to the Scholarship Fund were made in memory of Tom Heppell, who passed away in early January.  He was our past Social Convener and latterly a Member at Large.

This year 99+ teachers retired from Sooke, Saanich and Victoria School Districts.

Respectfully submitted,
Bronwyn Taylor, President
