Nanaimo Ladysmith Branch Report 2011

Our year began with another well attended ‘To Hell with the Bell’ brunch for recent retired teachers and principals and ended, as always, with a successful AGM.

Our 2010 AGM was much better attended than the previous two years and this is due in part to the revived interest in our association by members who had drifted away, as well as, new members joining and being willing to actively become involved in the RTA. The existing Executive agreed to remain in place with one or two modifications and this decision was acclaimed by the attending membership. Our Second VP took on the position of Sunshine Chair, which was vacated by a long serving member and their position was filled by a new member to our local. As in the previous year the Executive decided to forego the September meeting and instead had a lunch meeting in late August. During the remainder of the year we held our regular bi-monthly Executive meetings at the local Teachers Association office. Our committees continue to work diligently with the Social, Sunshine and Heritage Committees being the most active. The Social Chair rose to the challenge of finding a new, suitable location for our lunches and the solution has been extremely well received. The caterers have done much to enhance the venue and the food and service have been outstanding. The Social Chair and Committee have also presented some unique and extremely interesting programs over the past year, including a storyteller and a game of trivia. Our Sunshine Chair continued to keep close tabs on members who have been ill, suffered a loss, or have in some way need a bit of sunshine in their lives. During this past year we have begun to send out notices regarding deaths and memorial services to those members on our List Serve. The Heritage Committee has also continued its work in preserving and collating the Skipsey Educational Heritage Collection, as well as, searching for funds to continue their invaluable work. At the end of the year the Executive decided to send the outgoing Superintendent of Schools a token of gratitude along with a letter of thanks for the support he provided to the Heritage Committee in spearheading the acceptance by the School Board of a memorandum of understanding regarding the preservation and housing of the Skipsey Collection.

During the latter part of the year we had a meeting with the local Teachers’ Association regarding matters of mutual concern and we have agreed that cooperation and a more open relationship would be of benefit to both Associations. We also had representation at the BCTF Pension seminar held in the area earlier in the year with a positive response from the attendees. The President and Social Chair attended the local Teachers’ Association retirement dinner and presented each new retiree with an information package about the RTA and other relevant matters.

We had five luncheon meetings for the general membership. Our average attendance was much improved over the last two years as word of the new price and the fabulous food got around. This combined with the varied and interesting programs made for a successful year. Notices of our upcoming luncheons are placed in the local papers and special events or news are also covered. This year we sent out three ‘The Good Life’ newsletters that included pertinent photographs. These newsletters were either emailed or mailed to all members. Christmas cards were sent to all life members and shut-ins. In June two awards of $500 each were again presented to deserving Nanaimo graduating students and one for a similar amount to a Ladysmith student. Two members attended the South Zone meeting again held in Duncan in March.

This year has been very successful and with renewed energy we have well and truly begun working on our second ‘twenty-five’.

Respectfully submitted,

Carol Baird-Krul – President
