Parksville-Qualicum Branch Report 2011

The 2010-11 PQRTA year officially began with the Executive Meeting on August 5, 2010. The meeting was a busy one with plans for the coming year and adoption of policy.

On September 7, 2010, the traditional To Hell With The Bell Breakfast was held in the beautiful Milner Gardens, in Qualicum Beach, with 60 members attending (4 of whom were new retirees). Breakfast was catered by The Shriners.  It was evident from the smiling faces and the socializing that took place that everyone was happy to be spending the morning at the Gardens instead of in the classroom.

October 13, 2010 marked the PQRTA Fall General Meeting, held at the Tidal Room, Bayside Quality Inn in Parksville. Following the meeting, Anne-marie Kanester, a retired teacher from Vernon, presented a very interesting slideshow and commentary about her experiences, in 2009, as she trekked 800 km along the Camino de Santiago del Compostela from France, across the Pyrennes and into Spain.

The February 8, 2011 General Meeting was held at the Royal Canadian Legion #76 with 38 members attending. Guest Speaker, Ronine Sharp (aka The Memory Nurse) spoke on ways to maintain brain health, the difference between ordinary forgetfulness and dementia and the effects of dementia on the individual and his/her friends and family. Her informative presentation was much appreciated by those in attendance, who listened such that one “could hear a pin drop”.

April 8, 2011 saw 43 PQRTA members (and many non-PQRTA BCRTA members) attend the informational session of the PQRTA General meeting. Guest speakers, Lisa Hansen and Lynda Stewart of Johnson, Inc., and Judy de Vries and Gerry Tiede of the BCRTA, presented information, to the approximately 60 attendees, on insurances available from Johnson, Inc., BCRTA initiatives, pensions and the Extended Health Benefits Plan. It was clear that attendees found the information of great value.

Sunshine filled the day as 35 members and guests gathered at the Rotary Park in Qualicum Beach, on June 15, 2011, for the PQRTA Annual General Meeting. BBQ. Chef Extraordinaire Tom Manson prepared delicious chicken and steak to round out the picnic fare. Socializing, while soaking in the warmth of the sun and the sounds of the ocean, was the highlight of the day. The AGM saw a return of all 2010-11 Executive members to their same positions with Kay Howard stepping forward to serve as Membership Chairperson.

Respectfully submitted,
Valerie Dyer, 2009-10 PQRTA President
