Peace River South Branch Report 2011
The Dawson Creek branch has had another active and interesting year, meeting every two months for lunch, followed by a program or activity. Our summer trip to the Tumbler Ridge Golf Club for lunch, followed by a tour of the Dinosaur Museum, was enjoyed by all. It was especially memorable as we were able to meet George Hartford and his wife who lived there. George was a very active long-time member who, sadly, passed away in the winter.
Even though the day was cold and wet, the “To Hell with the Bell” was well attended, and everyone enjoyed the good food and socializing. Other activities during the year included a Chinese food buffet followed by a talk on our new Arts Centre, an Indian food buffet followed by a slide show on New Zealand, and a humorous talk by one of our members on the history and activities of our local Kiwanis organization.
We had a new and successful activity at our AGM in May—book sharing, with each member sharing the title, author, and brief description of one or two books. Everyone was happy to have a surprisingly varied list of books to read in the coming months!
The Christmas poinsettas and cards were again much appreciated by our life members.
In February, one of our members gave a very successful pre-retirement workshop. It was well attended, and we received very positive feedback.
June was busy as we again toured classes through our Pioneer Village, including the strict lessons in Reading, ‘Riting, and “Rithmetic
Our book, Books, Bells, and Bachelors: Early Schools of the South Peace, has been very successful. We have now sold 700 books. Last year we donated $1000 of our profit money to Plan Canada; this year we donated $1000 to the RR Smith Society.
After serving five years as president, my term is now up, and I’m happy to say we have a new president, Charlene Dokken. And for the first time, our group now has a vice-president, Rick Legear. I will still be very involved with the executive as past president and heritage chair. We were also very pleased to have our treasurer, Margaret Sutton, elected as a BCRTA Director for a 2-year term.
Respectfully submitted,
Cathy McKibben, President
