Powell River Branch Report 2011
Our annual ‘To hell with the bells’ lunch was held on the first day of school in September, with a good turnout. New retirees were welcomed and given a complimentary lunch.
Our Christmas lunch was held by the water at the Beach Gardens, and was well attended.
Campbell River hosted the annual tri-cities lunch this year. Fewer retirees attended this year.
Our President, Warren Wiley, attended the zone meeting hosted by Bob Taverner. It was a very useful exercise, especially the sharing of ideas.
Kirsten Dobler was the recipient of the annual PRRTA scholarship. Bruce Anderson made the presentation on behalf of the members.
Our annual AGM was held at Okeover and a delightful buffet lunch was put on by the chef of the Laughing Oyster restaurant.
Gail Scholefield, one of our members, reported on the success of the Lang Bay Native Plant Garden at the Lang Bay Salmon Hatchery. The RR Smith Foundation was given a special mention as the foundation donated $2600 toward the development of the garden. Students learn about plants native to the area.
Debby Lewis, Chair of SD#47, was guest speaker at the lunch. Many exciting things are happening in the district, including the building of a new elementary school, the Orca bus, run by volunteers to take books to children living out of town, and the development of a wilderness camp.
Cathy Fisher, PRDTA president also attended and advised us that 11 teachers would be retiring from the district this year.
Bruce Anderson was elected president for the 2011-2012 year.
Respectfully submitted,
Bruce Anderson, President
