Richmond Branch Report 2011
The general “mood” of the Richmond members is social, social and more social with all of these having a food component. The Social Committee organized 5 major events this past year starting with the “Back to School” luncheon and concluding with a Spring Pot Luck Heritage lunch. For the first time we combined the “Back to School” luncheon with our AGM and the AGM of our Scholarship Trust Fund Foundation. This turned out to be very satisfactory as the captive audience had full tummies and were quite willing to accept nominations for “Members at Large” and to volunteer to be directors for the scholarship fund. Richmond is very proud of its scholarship programme, giving out $4000 to each of our 10 secondary schools. Our scholarship fund is a separate entity but all RRTA members are members of this group.
The Heritage Committee is a small but dedicated group who are rightfully proud of their accomplishments built upon the efforts of prior members. This year the Richmond Board of Education was convinced to dust off and revise their heritage policy and to get the information out to all schools, encouraging each school to develop its own school-based archives. The RRTA group attended the district convention and was prominent in the Education Week mall displays, promoting the value of archiving educational materials. The Heritage Committee also received a Richmond City Heritage Award plaque honouring the committee’s efforts “to promote and enhance the preservation of education heritage in Richmond, including its history, its geography and its people”. We are very fortunate to have a heritage school site to amass our collections and to have the local school board “onside”.
Communications to and from members is evolving more and more to the electronic mode. More than half our members receive the newsletter by email. Bulletins, announcements and information are regularly sent out on the “loop”. The Richmond Board of Education has let us set up an information page on their intranet “Richnet” which allows all staff and former staff access to the site to keep up with our happenings. Information about walking group destinations, retirement functions, obits, etc. are posted in a timely manner - our goal is to reach as many people as possible.
It is always a challenge to get our new retirees to join in for the long term, but we keep trying. This year there are 54 “newbies” and if we can get half of them to join our group we will be happy. Last year saw 38 new members but of course, there were a number who exited also. To all locals, let’s keep the Zone meetings going. It is a supportive way to exchange the trials and triumphs of our efforts. And to all members of the BCRTA, congratulations on jobs well done.
Respectfully submitted,
Lynne Farquharson, President
