Sea to Sky Branch Report 2011
Recruiting new members to the BCRTA and our own branch continues to be a priority for the Sea To Sky RTA. Ten years ago when determining to become an official branch, we managed to scrape together the required 20 members. Today we are officially recorded as having 80 members, plus a possible three more from this June’s six retirees from our district.
At the present time this entitles us to two delegates, one being the president or designate, at the Annual AGM. With mostly single digit retirement numbers from our school district each year it is not likely that we could soon achieve two delegate entitlement should the present numbers be changed. We look forward to the discussion at the September 2011 AGM in Richmond.
Keeping our members informed is another STSRTA top priority. Bulletins and reminders as needed are dispensed in a timely fashion by email. Our monthly newsletter is now posted on our website for easy access to all (members without computers are partnered, usually with an obliging family member) and our website continues to a fount of valuable information on all things specific and general.
For the first time this past year we initiated a small branch membership fee. Prior to this we ran on the proverbial shoestring, relying on raffles for small amounts of income. While spending was not extravagant, our Christmas gathering was made more festive and an annual distribution of poinsettias to our 80+ members was established.
Welcomed to our Christmas gathering were four visiting BCRTA members from the Sunshine Coast and Coquitlam RTAs. Later in the year I, on behalf of our STS members, attended a fundraising event on the Sunshine Coast.
Interest in this exchange between locals provided discussion at our Metro West Zone meeting in the spring and it was suggested that such visits between locals within our zone take place whenever possible, so we are off to a good start.
Our local was saddened this past year with the deaths of two of our members. One was our Treasurer so the hunt is now on for his replacement.
Continuing our good relationship with our active teachers’ local, we had occasion as retired teachers to help with some need telephoning duties this spring.
Ever optimistic and forward looking, the STSRTA is looking at ways in which to broaden its base of operation. Our local members continue to be busy participants in community endeavours but many also manage to support our local by attending our monthly luncheons held each month at various restaurants throughout Squamish. Any BCRTA members planning on being in Squamish, could first look us up on our web site, where each month our luncheon venue is posted, then perhaps join us for lunch on any first Tuesday, September to June.
Best wishes and great success to all BCRTA members.
Respectfully submitted by,
Barbara Rudkin, President
