Shuswap & District Annual Branch Report 2011

We began our year with the annual “To Hell with the Bell” brunch in September. Each of our newly retired colleagues was issued an invitation in their retirement package from the District in June and we followed up with a phone call in August. Turn-out was great and we took the opportunity to ask for input into programme ideas and activities for future meetings.

We hold nine meetings per year; September and December meetings are socials and May is our AGM. We are fortunate in having Patricia Clough as our Programme Director and she does a great job of lining up local speakers with interesting information to share. Two retired colleagues presented a “mini-session” of their 6 part workshop on Brain Fitness which was so well-received that many signed up for the full package.

We had a local pharmacist present information on drug interactions, a representative of the RCMP talked about scams by telephone, internet and right at your doorstep, and presented ways to protect yourself. The local Emergency Team came to one meeting looking for volunteer “victims” for a disaster scenario they were preparing, and several members signed up and reported back on the experience. We had income tax information presented by a local specialist and a session on insurance with an emphasis on travel insurance from Johnson Insurance.

Our branch is working on reviewing our local “policies and procedures” and a committee hopes to have a draft to present to members in October, 2011. In addition, we have worked with other senior groups in the community and are pleased to be offering the possibility of starting a local COSCO branch. There will be an information/membership meeting in September. Our Cinderella fund is slowly becoming a reality with a “loose change” collection held at each meeting.

Our Executive remains same, after re-electing Anne Waters as our Secretary and Leslie Lowe as president at the AGM in May. We look forward to offering good information and support for retired educators for another year.
