Vancouver Branch Report 2011
The Vancouver Branch had a very busy year. We had twenty-three on our executive, each with a specific job to do. Our first executive meeting was held at a member’s home in July, where all the jobs were assigned and committees were formed. We outlined the calendar for the upcoming year. We decided to mail out a $10.00 gift certificate to all our new retirees, for use towards the cost of our “TGIF” brunch that is held on the first day of school. In all we had six very informative executive meetings throughout the year.
To advertise our luncheons and activities we send out a very detailed newsletter called ‘Vancouver Tabloid’. We had 6 stuffing gatherings where we fold and put our Tabloid into envelopes to be mailed to our 1300 plus members. Fifty of our members are receiving the Tabloid by email and we hope that this number will increase.
We have four luncheons during the year; the TGIF Brunch on the first day of school, a Christmas Luncheon, a Valentine Luncheon and a June luncheon and AGM. Most of these are held at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club which we really enjoy because of the beautiful view and the lovely meals. We had a 50\50 draw at each luncheon to raise money for the RR Smith foundation. At Christmas we had a local elementary school come to sing carols with us.
We sent six delegates to the BCRTA AGM in September. Our branch was represented by who are on the provincial board of directors. Two other branch members are on the board of directors of the RR Smith foundation. By being so involved at the provincial level we a re able to keep our members well informed.
This year we again had our Fall Seminar. At the coffee break some crafters sold items so we could do some early Christmas shopping. Annette O’Conner, co-chair of the BCRTA pensions committee gave us an update on Pension Matters. Brett Creed of Scotia McLeod discussed the Property Tax Deferment Program. Next we did a few stretches and exercises that we could do at home to concentrate on Seniors Keeping Fit. A lunch was served. Sheila Pither presented the COSCO workshop on Eating Safely. We all learned a great deal from our seminar.
Two VRTA members were sent as delegates to Ottawa in November to the NPSCF (National Pensioners and Senior Citizens Federation). It was very informative to learn about the conditions and concerns that seniors’ experience across Canada.
In December, two of our members organized the delivery of poinsettias to our honorary life members. Many really look forward to delivering these little red flowers to our elderly teacher friends. This not only brings Christmas joy to our honourary life members but we really enjoy visiting and having tea and a chat with them. We also invited our honorary life members to our Valentine Luncheon. We offered to pick them up. Children from one our elementary schools make valentine cards for them.
Every spring we organize an outing. This year we took a ferry ride to Mayne Island. We had a fantastic tour leader and everyone really enjoyed themselves.
The Vancouver branch is still well represented at COSCO with two of our members on the board of directors. We also have five delegates who attend the meetings.
Our branch has donated close $1000 to the RR Smith Memorial Fund.
As you have read, the Vancouver Branch has been very active. I wish the upcoming executive all the best.
Respectfully Submitted,
Merle Bennett, Past President
