THAT the following are the objectives of the Health & Housing Committee for the 2011/12 fiscal year:
1. Prepare a presentation on Home Support and Home Care for presentation to government for recommendation to the Board for action. This is the preventive stage on the continuum of care: Independent living with home support; Assisted living; Residential Care; Palliative Care
2. Maintain a watch of other seniors' issues related to Health & Housing and develop appropriate recommendations for the Board. E.g. Residential Care rate structure
3. Develop strategies in cooperation with Advocacy to inform and involve the membership in seniors' issues and specifically for home support and home care.
National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly- NICE
“Older adults (55+) from across Canada are invited to participate in a research study about their personal safety and experiences with mistreatment (abuse and neglect). English or French speaking participants from all backgrounds are welcome. Individuals who have and who have not experienced mistreatment are encouraged to participate. “
NICE is asking for older adult volunteers. Please consider volunteering or passing this information along to your network of contacts.
Tax Alert
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is warning taxpayers to beware of a recent scam where some Canadians are receiving a letter fraudulently identified as coming from the CRA and asking for personal information. The letter is not from the CRA

From the SUMMARY of REPORTS 2011
Committee Members: Margaret Sutton, Sylvia MacLeay, Cameron Cascon, Sheila Park, Jane MacRae, Mary Hunter, Cliff Boldt Chair
Corresponding Members: Regina Day, Patricia Nelson
The committee met 4 times this year, with nearly 5 months between the 3rd and 4th meetings due to cancellation of one set of meetings for budgetary reasons, the BCTF AGM and a federal election.
The committee agreed to work on specific issues providing credible, accurate and objective facts, statistics, information related to senior’s issues. Item 16.1.0 of BCRTA policies and procedures outlines the committee’s purposes in more detail.
To this end work was launched on the issue of hospital and facility cleanliness, health and nutritional issues and home support. Work is ongoing in all of these.
Jane MacRae will be collaborating with the University of Victoria Centre on Aging in the development of articles related to senior’s nutrition with an emphasis on nutrition as a preventative measure.
Home support for seniors will become a priority issue for the committee in 2011-2012. Adequate and affordable home support is seen as a way to keep seniors in their homes for longer periods of time, improving their quality of life and reducing costs and strains on public services.
The Committee will identify other senior’s groups, such as COSCO, with whom it can work in advocating for improved home support services for seniors.
The Committee also works closely with the Advocacy committee to support branches and individual members in making political parties aware of the benefits to the seniors and provincial budgets of improved home support. A fall election is anticipated, so this may be our first chance to make these points.
Respectfully submitted,
Cliff Boldt, Chair.
