From Summary of Reports 2010
The Membership Committee has been very active in all aspects of its mandate.
The Dogwood Recruitment Rewards campaign exceeded its goal of recruiting 800 new members and Johnsons has extended the initiative for another year.
The President and Membership Chair made two trips to speak to members, providing them with information and encouraging them to form a branch. As a result, Mission, Nicola Valley, Princeton, and Prince Rupert have now formed branches making a total of 47. A document entitled “How to Form a B.C. Retired Teachers’ Association Branch” has been written and distributed.
To assist branches, the Committee prepared an information package for the zone meetings; revised a document entitled “Being a Branch of the BCRTA”; encouraged and assisted branches to invite BCRTA members living in their community to join their branch; approved recruitment/retention branch grant applications; provided material for the new retiree recruitment packages. As well, a letter was sent out to new retirees who had not yet joined a branch encouraging them to do so.
As a branch grows and develops it is useful to have a written record that reflects the decisions made and methods employed in normal branch operation. In readiness for the BCRTA AGM, the Membership Committee is working on a sample BCRTA Policies and Procedures document that branches may adapt for their own purpose.
The Network, an email list of members living in remote areas, has expanded this year. The nearly 100 members receive BCRTA information and updates from time to time. This year, one member was funded to attend a zone meeting and report to the Network. Since the Network has been operating for a couple of years, its members were surveyed to comment on its general operation. The many positive remarks indicated satisfaction with this project and so it will remain “as is” for now. Any member who lives in a remote area and does not belong to a branch is welcome to become part of this group. Send your email address to Judy de Vries, devriesj@telus.net.
Associate Membership has increased 400% in the last 5 years and doubled in the last year. This is primarily due to the twice-yearly email invitation sent to retiring educators in the independent and private schools.
The Membership Application Form has received a new look with application form and branch listings now on the inside of the document.
This year the Membership Committee produced a beautiful BCRTA brochure which illustrates the breadth and depth of our organization. It is hoped that it will be included in the Pension Corporation’s mailing to new retirees. The brochure will be available at the BCRTA AGM and distributed to BCRTA branches, BCTF locals and BC school districts. Members may view this newly designed brochure on the BCRTA website.
All of the above achievements are due to the hard work and dedication of committee members Sheila Pither, Dennis Anderson, Jo Ann Lauber, Sam Lewindon, June Striegler, and Gerry Tiede. Thank you to the branch presidents and the Postscript who promoted the Dogwood Recruitment Rewards campaign and other Membership Committee initiatives.
Respectfully submitted
Judy de Vries, Chair

Report from the BCRTA Membership Committee Re its Meeting of June 23rd, 2009
The Committee chairperson shared a complimentary letter from a North Vancouver member regarding the "Membership and Politics" article in the Summer 2009 edition of Postscript.
Committee members drew up a plan for the 2009 Delegates' Day session set to evaluate 2008-2009 BCRTA Zone Meetings, and to consider their future.
Plans were also drawn up for the D.D. session "Whither Membership: what do the members want?"
The Committee's 2008-2009 involvements were then briefly reviewed: initiating zone meetings; preparing election-related materials; raising the issues of criminal records checks and the BCTF's position on FSA testing; and reviewing aspects of the BCRTA's AGM and Delegates' Day activities and procedures.
Some preliminary consideration was given to the objectives for 2009-2010, and the meeting concluded with the sharing of a couple of humorous anecdotes.
