Guaranteed Income Suppliment (GIS)
The Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) provides a monthly non-taxable benefit to low-income Old Age Security (OAS) recipients living in Canada.
- You must apply for this benefit
- Added to OAS for low-income seniors
- Based on income and marital status
- Not asset tested
- Is available between 60 and 64 for survivors and low-income couples
- Triggers other benefits
To receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement benefit, a person must be receiving an Old Age Security pension (OAS). The yearly income of the applicant or, in the case of a couple, the combined income of the applicant and spouse or common-law partner, cannot exceed certain limits.
